Residencies

Artist residencies move our theatre, our artists, and our community and audiences forward.

OPEN CALL Residency program 2026

Divadlo Štúdio tanca opens the next edition of its residency program, dedicated to supporting the Slovak independent arts scene and creating space for artistic work during uncertain times. The 2026 residencies emphasize solidarity, resource sharing, and alternative strategies that help sustain creativity and collaboration. Together with our community and colleagues, we foster an environment that supports contemporary dance and artistic exchange.

The program offers two main residency types, along with a new paid residency option:

1. Dream Box

A model for movement research, early-stage project development and experimentation. Available only to local artists, running during spring and summer, providing rehearsal space without accommodation.
Duration: 7 – 14 days
Honorarium: no
Accommodation: no
Travel: no

2. Open Call SOLIDARITY

Artists can apply with any type of residency they need. Applications are then assigned to one of two groups:

a) Pay / Support

No curatorial selection.
For artists with grants or those wishing to support Slovak culture by purchasing a residency. Provides rehearsal space and accommodation for 1–2 weeks.
Duration: 7 – 14 days
What you paying for: space and accommodation

This model makes it possible to support additional artists without funding.

b) Don’t Pay / Are Supported

Curatorial selection.
For Slovak or international artists without financial support, seeking space for their work. The curatorial team will outline parameters for supported projects while keeping the program open and flexible.
Duration: 7 – 14 days
Honorarium: depending on solidarity funding
Accommodation fee: no
Travel: no

New in 2026: Solidarity in Practice

The number of residency purchases directly determines how many artists can be supported for free. When possible, the program may also cover fees or production costs for a work in progress or performance.

Final Step / Artgang: Slovak Solidarity Day

For projects ready for a final step or approaching a premiere, we offer a shared performance evening – double bill.

DST provides the theatre hall and basic technical support.
If the project requires extended technical involvement, the costs are covered by the artist.

Why do we provide our space for artists to complete residencies?

We are a theatre technically and spatially suitable for the creation of dance works. We see it as our duty to provide these spaces to independent artists or other established companies from Slovakia and abroad.
We want to connect with artists and support their development in the field of contemporary dance and physical theatre.
In addition to a technically equipped space, we also provide the professional support needed to cultivate one’s own practice and self-development.
Residency programs also bring us new inspirations that come with each artist’s unique approach.
We provide our audiences with the opportunity to confront the work of visiting artists with our own.
Residencies often result in a work-in-progress output, so the audience can see the process of creation and influence it with their questions, opinions, and reactions. And deepen their perception of the specifics of dance art.
